A diploma research was discussed at the Faculty of Medicine / University of Kufa in the specialty of general surgery for the student Mohammed Abdullah Harrat who titled his research as (Predicting factors for hypocalcemia after the eradication of the thyroid gland). The study sought to track patients with an increased risk of hypocalcemia after thyroidectomy and to study preoperative and intraoperative predictive factors for hypocalcemia in 123 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy by measuring serum calcium and parathyroid hormone (PTH) before Surgery and two weeks after it. The study showed that parathyroid hormone levels at the two-week mark had a promising predictive value for hypocalcaemia, with a sensitivity of 87.8%, a specificity of 73.3%, and an accuracy of 80.7%. In general, the results of this study can be used in risk assessment, prevention, and strategies for managing calcium deficiency in patients with postoperative thyroidectomy.
