A doctoral thesis was discussed at the Faculty of Medicine / University of Kufa. Hussam Hamza Al-Fatlawi, the student from department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics tagged his thesis as (Effect of sitagliptin and pterostilbene on the progression of atherosclerosis in male rabbits by stimulating autophagy: possible modification of the mTOR pathway). The study aimed to evaluate whether the inhibitors of the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR), sitagliptin and pterostilpine may reduce the progression of atheroscler osis by investigating the role
of autophagy in this process. The results showed that both sitagliptin and pterostilbene are able to inhibit lipid oxidation and the development of inflammatory markers in aortic tissues. Moreover, they may stimulate autophagy,
which in turn slows the progression of atherosclerosis.
