Dr. Saif Jabbar Almayah and Dr. Thikra Abdullah Mahmood, Faculty of Medicine / University of Kufa, with the participation of the teaching staff at the University of Babylon, Dr. Haider Hamid Abbas, published a scientific research entitled (Epstein-Barr virus infection associated with low white blood cells in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy in province of Najaf / Iraq). The research published in Indian Journal JPAM – journal of Pure and Applied Microbiology -which is classified within Scopus index. Dr. Almayah; said, “This research aims to investigate the existence of a relationship between low WBC and viral infections by blood tests and immunological and molecular techniques for cancer patients who had low WBC and receiving chemotherapy”. Dr. Almayah added that, the results reached that there were a correlation between decreased number of WBC and viral infection in cancer patients who receive chemotherapy. Therefore, presence of virus in its active state plays an important role in exacerbation of decreased WBC, especially since this virus has the ability to reactivate the infection after the latent phase and then targets the vital cells and organs in case of immune system malfunctions in patients.
